How much does a good PA system cost?

The cost of a good PA system depends on application and scale. Entry-level active PA packages (two 10-inch tops plus a 15-inch subwoofer) start around €600–€1200, suitable for small events, mobile DJs and presentations. Mid-range systems with 12-inch or 15-inch speakers and 800–1000W power range from €1500 to €4000, ideal for bands, clubs and medium venues. Professional line array systems for large concerts and festivals typically cost €10,000–€50,000+ including rigging, amplifiers and processing. At LTT, you'll find PA systems across all price points, backed by expert advice to match your budget and performance requirements.

What is the difference between active and passive speakers?

Active speakers have built-in amplifiers and crossovers, requiring only a line-level audio signal and AC power to operate. They're self-contained, easy to set up and ideal for portable applications, small to medium events and users who value simplicity. Passive speakers require external power amplifiers and crossovers, offering greater flexibility for large installations and allowing sound engineers to precisely match amplifier power to speaker load and venue acoustics. Passive systems are preferred for touring productions, permanent installations and scalable multi-speaker arrays where centralised amplification and processing provide better control and efficiency.

Which PA system suits my venue size?

Venue size determines required speaker power, coverage pattern and system configuration. For small rooms up to 100 people (cafés, meeting rooms, small clubs), compact active systems with 10-inch or 12-inch speakers and 300–500W RMS provide adequate coverage. Medium venues (150–500 people, such as function halls, mid-size clubs, outdoor events) benefit from 12-inch or 15-inch active or passive systems with 800–1500W RMS plus dedicated subwoofers. Large venues and festivals (500+ people) require line array systems, multi-zone coverage, high-output subwoofer arrays and professional amplification totalling 5000W+ RMS. LTT's technical team can help you specify the optimal PA configuration based on your venue dimensions, audience capacity and acoustic environment.

Should I rent or buy a PA system?

Buying a PA system makes financial sense if you use it regularly—typically more than 10–15 events per year. Ownership eliminates rental costs, ensures equipment availability and allows you to build familiarity with your system's performance and operation. Renting is cost-effective for occasional use, one-off events or when you need specialised equipment (such as large-format line arrays) that exceeds your typical requirements. Many professionals own a core PA system for regular gigs and rent additional speakers, subwoofers or processing for larger productions. At LTT, we offer competitive pricing on professional PA systems, making ownership accessible for working sound engineers, venues and production companies.

What power rating do I need for outdoor events?

Outdoor events require significantly more power than indoor venues due to lack of boundary reinforcement and open-air sound dispersion. As a guideline, plan for 20–30 watts RMS per person for speech and light music, 30–50 watts per person for live bands and DJ events, and 50–100+ watts per person for high-SPL electronic music and festival applications. For example, an outdoor event with 300 people and live band performance would require approximately 12,000–15,000 watts RMS total system power, distributed across full-range speakers and subwoofers. Wind, ambient noise and audience distance from speakers also influence power requirements—consult LTT's technical team for precise system sizing based on your outdoor event parameters.

How do I safely suspend speaker boxes from truss?

Suspending speaker boxes from truss requires certified rigging hardware, proper load calculation and compliance with safety regulations such as DGUV Vorschrift 17. Use only speakers designed for flying, equipped with rated rigging points (M10 inserts or flying bars). Attach speakers to aluminium truss using certified clamps rated for the combined load, and always install secondary safety cables with a minimum 10:1 safety factor. Calculate total suspended load including speaker weight, rigging hardware and dynamic forces. Ensure truss systems are properly engineered, inspected and load-tested. At LTT, our Naxpro-Truss systems and Riggatec rigging accessories meet TÜV certification standards, and our technical team can advise on compliant rigging solutions for your PA installation.

What cables do I need for a PA system?

A complete PA system requires several cable types: balanced XLR cables (3-pin) carry line-level audio signals from mixer to active speakers or amplifiers, rejecting interference over long runs. Speaker cables with Speakon NL4 or NL8 connectors link power amplifiers to passive speakers, using heavy-gauge wire (2.5–4 mm²) to handle high current without loss. Powercon or IEC locking AC cables supply mains power to active speakers and amplifiers. For networked systems, Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cables enable remote control and monitoring. At LTT, you'll find professional-grade speaker cables, XLR cables and power distribution solutions engineered for reliable, noise-free performance in demanding event environments.

Can I expand my PA system over time?

Yes, professional PA systems are designed for scalability. Start with a core system (two full-range speakers and a subwoofer) and expand by adding more speakers for wider coverage, additional subwoofers for increased low-frequency output, or stage monitors for performer foldback. When expanding, match speaker models and brands to maintain consistent tonal character and ensure compatible impedance and power handling. Passive systems offer the greatest flexibility—add more cabinets and scale amplifier power accordingly. Active systems can be expanded by adding identical or compatible models and using mixer outputs or signal splitters to feed additional zones. LTT stocks a wide range of PA components and accessories, making it easy to grow your system as your production needs evolve.
