What does PAR lighting mean?

PAR stands for Parabolic Aluminized Reflector, describing the lamp's internal design. A parabolic reflector coated with aluminium sits behind the light source, focusing emitted light into a controlled, directional beam. This design originated in automotive headlamps and was adapted for stage lighting in the late 1950s. PAR lamps produce highly directional beams with minimal spill, making them ideal for stage washes, accent lighting and architectural applications. The term PAR is followed by a number indicating the lamp diameter in eighths of an inch — for example, PAR64 measures 8 inches (203.2 mm) in diameter.

What are the disadvantages of PAR lights?

PAR lamps offer no internal beam shaping, gobo projection or zoom capability, unlike profile spots or moving heads. Their beam angle is fixed by the lamp or lens, requiring physical lamp changes to alter the spread. Traditional halogen PAR lamps consume substantial power — a 1000W PAR64 draws over 4 amps — and generate significant heat, necessitating careful ventilation and gel management. What does PAR mean in flood lights?

In flood light contexts, PAR refers to the same Parabolic Aluminized Reflector technology used in stage lighting. PAR flood lights use wide-angle lenses or reflectors — typically designated WFL (Wide Flood) with beam angles of 50 to 70 degrees — to provide broad, even illumination over large areas. What is the difference between LED and PAR light?

How many PAR lights do I need for my stage?

The number of PAR lamps required depends on stage size, desired light levels and fixture specifications. As a general guideline, a small club stage (4 × 6 metres) may require 8 to 12 PAR64 fixtures for basic front, back and side lighting. A medium theatre stage (8 × 10 metres) typically uses 16 to 24 PAR lamps across multiple positions. Large concert stages demand 40 or more fixtures arranged in clusters and bars. Calculate coverage by considering beam angle and throw distance: a PAR64 with a 24-degree medium flood beam produces a 4-metre-diameter circle at 10 metres distance. Overlap beams by 30–50% to ensure even coverage and avoid dark spots.

Can PAR lights be used outdoors?

Yes, PAR lamps are widely used for outdoor events, provided they meet appropriate weatherproofing standards. Look for fixtures rated IP65 or higher, indicating protection against dust ingress and water jets from any direction. IP65-rated LED PAR lamps are suitable for outdoor festivals, architectural façade lighting and garden installations, withstanding rain and temperature extremes. Traditional halogen PAR lamps in sealed-beam construction also tolerate outdoor use, though their high heat output requires careful positioning away from flammable materials. Always ensure power distribution equipment is similarly weatherproofed and that fixtures are securely rigged to withstand wind loading.

Which PAR lamp size should I buy for theatre front-of-house lighting?

For theatre front-of-house positions, PAR38 and PAR56 fixtures are the most common choices. PAR38 lamps (120.65 mm diameter) offer a good balance of output and fixture weight for smaller theatres with throw distances up to 8 metres. PAR56 fixtures (177.8 mm diameter) provide higher output suitable for medium-sized stages with throws of 10 to 15 metres. Select medium flood (MFL) beam angles for even area coverage or narrow spot (NSP) configurations to highlight specific performers or set pieces. LED models with high CRI (85 or above) ensure accurate colour rendering of costumes and skin tones under stage lighting.

What does the CP60, CP61, CP62 designation mean on PAR64 halogen lamps?

CP codes identify specific sealed-beam halogen PAR64 lamp types with different beam angles. CP60 designates a very narrow spot (VNSP) with approximately 12-degree beam angle, ideal for long-throw applications. CP61 is a narrow spot (NSP) with 14-degree spread, suitable for highlighting performers from distance. CP62 indicates a medium flood (MFL) with 24-degree beam angle, the most versatile configuration for general stage washing. All three types typically operate at 1000W and 230V.
