How many watts should an outdoor floodlight have?

The right wattage for an outdoor floodlight depends on the area you want to light. For small zones such as paths, terraces or single objects, 10–20 W is usually enough. Larger areas like driveways, courtyards and facades benefit from 30–50 W. For event and stage flooding, choose fixtures of 50 W or more, delivering up to around 16,500 lumens. Because modern LED floodlights reach roughly 90 lm/W, you get high brightness at low running cost. Always match wattage to lumen output and to the size of the surface rather than buying the highest wattage by default.

What IP rating do I need for outdoor floodlights?

For outdoor floodlights, IP65 is the practical minimum: it is dust-tight and protected against water jets, which covers most garden and event applications. For exposed positions or heavy rain, choose IP66 for protection against powerful water jets. Near pools, ponds or for ground-recessed installations, opt for IP67, which withstands temporary immersion. The IP code uses two digits — the first for solid particles, the second for water. For temporary outdoor events, where fixtures are exposed from every angle, never go below IP65 and combine it with a corrosion-resistant aluminium or stainless-steel housing.

What is the difference between warm white and cold white outdoor floodlights?

Warm white and cold white outdoor floodlights differ in colour temperature, measured in Kelvin. Warm white at around 3000 K produces a cosy, inviting atmosphere, making it ideal for terraces, facades and gardens. Cold or daylight white at around 6500 K produces crisp, functional light, well suited to security lighting, work areas and bright stage looks. Neutral white at 4000–4500 K sits between the two and suits paths and entrances. For natural-looking colours, choose a CRI of 80–90. At events, cold and neutral white often photograph best, while warm white creates intimate ambient scenes.

What is the difference between an LED spot and an LED floodlight?

An LED spot and an LED floodlight belong to the same product family but differ in beam angle and purpose. An LED floodlight uses a wide beam to illuminate larger areas evenly — driveways, courtyards, facades or stage backdrops — and is mainly functional lighting. An LED spot uses a narrow beam to accent a single object such as a tree, sculpture, flower bed or entrance, creating focused atmosphere. In practice, professionals combine both: narrow-beam spots to highlight details and wide-beam floodlights to flood whole areas. The choice comes down to whether you want accent lighting or wide-area flooding.

Which LED outdoor floodlight is best for the garden?

The best LED outdoor floodlight for the garden is a fixture with at least IP65 protection, a corrosion-resistant aluminium housing and a swivelling head you can aim at the object you want to highlight. For most gardens, 10–30 W in warm white (3000 K) creates an inviting atmosphere, while ground-spike models offer maximum placement flexibility thanks to plug-and-play cabling. Choose solar for accent and ambient garden lighting, and mains-powered fixtures for demanding or professional applications.

How do I mount an outdoor floodlight on a truss for an event?

To mount an outdoor floodlight on a truss for an event, attach it with a rigging clamp such as a Riggatec hook clamp to the aluminium truss tube, then add a secondary safety cable as a mandatory backup. Before lifting, check the floodlight weight against the load rating of both the truss and the clamp, and never overload the structure. Route weatherproof, IP-rated cabling cleanly and protect connectors from rain. In windy conditions, secure the structure and avoid rigging above an audience without a proper load calculation.
