What is the difference between spot and beam moving heads?

Beam moving heads produce an extremely narrow, high-intensity shaft of light (typically 1° to 5° beam angle) designed for dramatic aerial effects and long-throw applications, creating laser-like beams that cut through haze. Spot moving heads offer a wider, adjustable beam angle (commonly 10° to 45°) with hard, sharp edges, equipped with gobo wheels, colour mixing and zoom capabilities for pattern projection and precise illumination of performers and stage areas. Beams prioritise raw intensity and parallel output, while spots emphasise versatility, edge definition and the ability to project complex patterns and textures.

What are moving stage lights called?

Moving stage lights are commonly called "moving heads" or "intelligent fixtures" in the professional lighting industry. The term refers to automated lighting fixtures with motorised pan and tilt mechanisms that allow the light source to move dynamically across multiple axes. Specific types include beam moving heads (narrow, intense aerial effects), spot moving heads (gobo projection and focal lighting), wash moving heads (wide colour coverage), and hybrid fixtures that combine multiple functions. These fixtures are controlled via DMX512 protocol and form the backbone of modern concert, theatre and event lighting systems.

What are the different types of moving head lights?

The three main types of moving head lights are beam, spot and wash fixtures, each designed for specific visual applications. Beam moving heads create narrow, intense shafts of light (1°–5° angle) for aerial effects and long-throw projection. Spot moving heads produce wider, adjustable beams (10°–45°) with gobo wheels and prisms for pattern projection and focal lighting. Wash moving heads deliver broad, soft-edged colour coverage for general illumination and backdrop lighting. Hybrid moving heads combine all three functions in a single fixture, offering maximum versatility. Additional specialised types include profile fixtures (theatrical framing shutters) and LED pixel fixtures (individual LED control for video effects).

Can a spot moving head be used as a beam?

While spot moving heads can narrow their beam angle via motorised zoom, they cannot truly replicate the performance characteristics of dedicated beam fixtures. Spot optics are designed for edge definition, gobo projection and adjustable focus, which introduces optical elements that diffuse the light and prevent the tight, parallel collimation that defines a true beam. A spot zoomed to its narrowest setting may achieve 10°–15° beam angle, but this remains significantly wider than the 1°–5° angle of dedicated beam fixtures. For applications requiring genuine laser-like aerial effects and maximum intensity over long distances, dedicated beam moving heads are essential; spots excel at different tasks including pattern projection and focal illumination.

Which moving head lights are right for me?

The right moving head depends on your specific application, venue size and visual requirements. Choose beam moving heads for concerts, festivals and nightclubs where dramatic aerial effects and long-throw intensity are priorities; they excel in large venues with haze or fog. Select spot moving heads for theatre productions, corporate events and applications requiring gobo projection, logo display and precise performer illumination; they offer maximum versatility in mid-sized venues. For mobile DJs and small event spaces, compact LED spot fixtures (150W–200W) provide excellent value and portability. Large-scale productions and permanent installations benefit from hybrid fixtures that combine beam, spot and wash functions, maximising creative options while minimising rigging complexity. Consider venue size, typical audience capacity, rigging capabilities and budget when making your selection.

Are LED moving heads better than discharge lamp moving heads?

LED moving heads offer significant advantages for most professional applications, including instant-on capability without warm-up time, lower power consumption (typically 150W–350W versus 500W+ for discharge lamps), longer service life (30,000–50,000 hours versus 2,000–3,000 hours), reduced maintenance costs, and cooler operation that simplifies thermal management. LED fixtures also eliminate the need for lamp replacement and the associated costs and downtime. However, high-end discharge lamp beam fixtures still offer superior raw intensity and tighter beam collimation for stadium-scale applications. For the majority of concert, theatre and event applications, modern LED moving heads deliver better overall value, reliability and operational efficiency than discharge lamp equivalents.

What does a professional moving head cost?

Professional moving head prices vary significantly based on output, features and build quality. Entry-level LED spot moving heads suitable for mobile DJs and small venues start around €400–€600, offering basic gobo projection, colour mixing and DMX control. Mid-range models (€800–€1,500) add features like rotating gobos, dual prisms, higher output and improved build quality suitable for rental companies and permanent installations. Professional-grade fixtures for touring productions and large venues range from €2,000 to €5,000+, delivering the intensity, feature depth, IP-rated weatherproofing and reliability required for demanding applications. Beam fixtures typically command premium pricing due to specialised high-intensity optics. When budgeting, factor in rigging hardware, DMX cabling, control consoles and atmospheric effects machines for a complete system.

How do I control moving head spots and beams?

Moving head spots and beams are controlled via DMX512 protocol, the professional lighting industry standard for fixture communication. A DMX lighting console sends control data through 5-pin XLR cables to each fixture, with each unit assigned a unique DMX start address. Professional consoles from manufacturers like ChamSys, Avolites or MA Lighting offer comprehensive control over all fixture parameters including pan, tilt, colour, gobo selection, prism effects, zoom and focus. Alternative control methods include sound-to-light mode (built-in microphone triggers effects in response to music), master-slave operation (one fixture controls multiple units), and stand-alone pre-programmed shows. RDM (Remote Device Management) protocol enables bidirectional communication for remote addressing and status monitoring, significantly simplifying setup and troubleshooting in professional installations.
