What is the difference between ELA amplifiers and 100V amplifiers?

There is no difference – the terms are synonymous. "ELA" stands for "Elektroakustische Anlage" (electroacoustic system) and refers to public address systems that use 100V constant voltage technology. ELA amplifiers are 100V amplifiers, and the terms are used interchangeably in professional audio. Both describe amplifiers that output a constant 100V signal to drive speakers equipped with step-down transformers, allowing long cable runs and parallel connection of multiple speakers with different power ratings.

How many 100V speakers can be connected per zone?

You can connect as many 100V speakers as you like to a single zone, provided the total power (sum of all speaker wattages) does not exceed the amplifier's rated power for that zone. For example, a 240W zone can drive any combination of speakers totalling up to 240W – such as eight 30W ceiling speakers, or a mix of 50W, 25W and 12W speakers. It is recommended to load each zone to 60–90% of its rated capacity to maintain headroom and prevent clipping. The beauty of 100V systems is that all speakers are connected in parallel, and each receives its rated power regardless of how many others are on the line.

What cable cross-section is needed for 100V systems?

For most installations, 1.5 mm² cable is suitable for runs up to 100 metres with typical speaker loads (100W–300W total). For shorter runs under 30 metres, 0.75 mm² is acceptable, while runs exceeding 100 metres or very high-power systems (500W+) require 2.5 mm² or larger. The key is to keep cable resistance below 5% of the load impedance. Calculate load impedance as 100² / total_watts; for a 240W load this is 41.7 ohms, so maximum cable resistance should be 2.1 ohms. Copper cable at 1.5 mm² has approximately 0.017 ohm/metre resistance, allowing 100-metre runs (200 metres total conductor length) within this limit.

Can 100V amplifiers drive 4-ohm speakers?

Some ELA amplifiers offer dual-mode outputs that can drive both 100V speaker lines and low-impedance (4-ohm or 8-ohm) speakers, but you cannot mix them on the same output. The amplifier will have separate terminals or a switch to select between 100V mode and low-impedance mode. In 100V mode, you connect speakers with line matching transformers; in low-impedance mode, you connect standard PA speakers directly. Check the amplifier's specifications – models with "100V / 4–16 ohm" output capability support both, while pure ELA amplifiers support only 100V operation. Never connect a low-impedance speaker directly to a 100V output, as the high voltage will damage the speaker.

What does a professional ELA 100V amplifier cost?

Entry-level ELA 100V amplifiers with 60–120W output and basic mixing functions start around €250–€400. Mid-range models with 180–350W power, multi-zone capability and built-in media players typically cost €400–€800. Professional multi-channel matrix mixers with 4–6 zones, 240W+ per channel, emergency system compliance and monitoring contacts range from €800 to €1,800. High-end models exceeding 1000W total power or featuring advanced DSP, network control and redundant power supplies can cost €2,000–€5,000 or more. Price depends on power rating, number of zones, feature set and compliance certifications (e.g. DIN EN 60849 for emergency systems).

Which ELA amplifier is suitable for a restaurant or café?

For a typical restaurant or café (100–200 m²), a 120W–180W ELA mixer amplifier with 2–4 zones is ideal. This provides enough power for 8–12 ceiling speakers (10W–15W each) distributed across dining areas, bar and outdoor terrace. Look for models with built-in media player (USB/SD/Bluetooth) for background music, multiple line inputs for additional sources, and zone volume controls to adjust levels independently in different areas. Brands such as Omnitronic, Monacor and Audac offer suitable models in the €350–€600 range. Calculate total speaker load (sum of all speaker wattages) and choose an amplifier rated for 20–30% more power to ensure headroom and prevent distortion during peak periods.

Do ELA 100V systems require special speakers?

Yes, ELA 100V systems require speakers equipped with line matching transformers (also called 100V transformers or ELA transformers). These transformers step down the 100V line signal to the speaker's operating voltage and are typically built into ceiling speakers, wall speakers and horn speakers designed for ELA use. The transformer has multiple taps (e.g. 3W, 6W, 12W, 25W) allowing you to select the power level for each speaker. You cannot use standard low-impedance PA speakers directly on a 100V line without adding an external line matching transformer. When purchasing speakers for an ELA system, always specify "100V" or "ELA" models and select the appropriate power tap to match your system design.

What is pilot tone monitoring in ELA systems?

Pilot tone monitoring is a supervision system used in professional ELA installations, especially those complying with emergency voice alarm standards (DIN EN 60849 / EN 54-16). The amplifier continuously sends a low-level tone – typically 20 Hz or 25 kHz, outside the audible range – through each speaker line. An end-of-line resistor at the furthest speaker completes the circuit. The amplifier monitors whether the pilot tone returns correctly; if the tone is absent or incorrect, it indicates a fault such as a broken cable, disconnected speaker or short circuit. This allows cable and speaker faults to be detected immediately rather than remaining hidden until an emergency occurs. Pilot tone monitoring is mandatory for certified emergency voice alarm systems and is available on professional ELA amplifiers designed for safety-critical applications.
