What is the difference between a curtain track and a curtain rod?

A curtain track (also called a curtain rail) is a profiled aluminium or plastic channel in which gliders or runners travel, keeping the track largely invisible once installed. Can curtain tracks be mounted on both ceiling and wall?

Ceiling mounting maximises the usable drop height and is preferred for large spans. Wall mounting is the practical choice when ceiling access is restricted or ceiling height is low. How do I choose between single, double and triple curtain tracks?
