What is meant by LED lamp?

An LED lamp is an electric light source that produces illumination using light-emitting diodes (LEDs) rather than incandescent filaments or gas discharge. LEDs generate light through electroluminescence — a process where electrons recombine with electron holes in a semiconductor material, releasing energy as photons. Professional LED lamps for stage and event applications typically achieve luminous efficacy between 150 and 200 lumens per watt, far exceeding traditional lighting technologies. They're available in all standard socket types including E27, E14, GU10, and professional tube formats, making them direct retrofit replacements for conventional lamps in existing fixtures.

Which LED brand is best for professional event lighting?

For professional stage and event applications, Osram and Philips are the leading LED lamp manufacturers, each with distinct strengths. Osram excels in colour rendering performance with CRI values above 90, making their lamps ideal for theatre, broadcast, and applications requiring accurate colour reproduction. Philips offers superior dimming performance and switching resilience, particularly valuable for touring productions and trade show installations requiring frequent setup cycles. Both brands provide comprehensive socket compatibility and rated lifespans exceeding 30,000 hours. The optimal choice depends on your specific application — LTT's technical team can recommend the best solution for your requirements.

Do LED lights run a lot of electricity?

No, LED lights consume significantly less electricity than traditional lighting technologies. Professional LED lamps use 85–90% less energy than equivalent incandescent bulbs and 50–70% less than fluorescent tubes. A typical 15-watt LED lamp delivers 1500 lumens, replacing a 100-watt incandescent while drawing only 15% of the power. For event venues and touring productions, this translates to substantial cost savings on electricity bills and reduced power infrastructure requirements. The lower energy consumption also means you can operate more fixtures per circuit, reducing the number of distribution cables needed for complex lighting designs.

Are LED bulbs dimmable for stage applications?

Yes, many professional LED lamps are specifically designed for dimming in stage and event contexts. However, dimming performance depends on both the LED lamp specification and driver compatibility. Look for LED lamps explicitly marked as "dimmable" and verify compatibility with your existing dimmer systems. Philips MasterLED range offers "Dim to Warm" technology that replicates the colour temperature shift of dimmed incandescent lamps, creating natural atmospheric effects essential for stage lighting. For DMX-controlled installations, choose LED fixtures with integrated drivers designed for smooth, flicker-free dimming across the full 0–100% range. LTT can advise on driver selection for your specific dimming requirements.

Can I replace a conventional bulb with an LED lamp in stage fixtures?

Yes, LED lamps are designed as direct retrofit replacements for conventional bulbs in most stage and event fixtures. Professional LED lamps are available in all standard socket types — E27, E14, GU10, GU5.3, G9, and tube formats — ensuring mechanical compatibility with existing housings. However, verify three critical factors before retrofitting: first, confirm the LED lamp is rated for enclosed fixtures if your housing lacks ventilation; second, check that the beam angle matches your application requirements (LED spotlights typically offer 25° to 60° options); third, ensure any existing dimming systems are compatible with LED technology or install appropriate LED-compatible drivers. LTT provides complete specification data to support successful retrofitting.

How long do professional LED lamps last in event applications?

Professional LED lamps from manufacturers like Osram and Philips typically achieve rated lifespans between 25,000 and 50,000 hours in event applications. This represents 8–15 years of service in a theatre operating 300 days annually, or 15–30 years in a club running weekend events. Unlike incandescent lamps that fail abruptly, LEDs gradually decrease in light output over time — professional specifications define lifespan as the point where output falls to 70% of initial lumens (L70 rating). Frequent switching does not reduce LED lifespan, making them ideal for applications with intermittent operation. The extended lifespan dramatically reduces replacement labour costs, particularly for fixtures rigged at height on truss systems.

What colour temperature should I choose for stage LED lamps?

Colour temperature selection for stage LED lamps depends on your creative intent and application context. Extra warm white (2700K) creates intimate, candlelight-like atmospheres ideal for theatrical productions and club environments. Warm white (3000K) suits general stage washing and corporate events where a welcoming but professional ambience is required. Cool white (4000K) increases visual clarity for trade show stands and exhibition lighting where product visibility is paramount. Daylight (6500K) replicates natural outdoor light, useful for broadcast applications and colour-critical work. Many professional productions use multiple colour temperatures, selecting specific lamps for each fixture position. LTT stocks the complete range to support sophisticated lighting designs.

Are LED lamps compatible with Naxpro-Truss rigging systems?

Yes, LED lamps integrate seamlessly with Naxpro-Truss and other professional rigging systems. The reduced weight of LED technology — typically 50–200 grams per lamp compared to 200–500 grams for halogen equivalents — decreases structural load on truss sections, allowing more fixtures per span without exceeding working load limits. When mounting LED fixtures on FD31 or HD31 truss, maintain 100mm minimum spacing between fixtures to ensure adequate convective cooling for the LED drivers. Use Riggatec cable management accessories to route power and DMX cables along the truss structure while maintaining required separation between data and power lines. All installations must comply with DGUV Vorschrift 17 safety regulations — LTT provides complete documentation to support compliance verification.
