LED Lamps socket GU5.3
In addition to the much larger type G53, socket GU5.3 can also be used as an LED lamp socket. GU5.3 sockets have a pin spacing of only 5.33 mm. Illuminants with this socket are used in low-voltage systems that are supplied with 12 volts via an upstream transformer. The diameter of the contact pins is also standardised; it must be between 1.47 and 1.65 mm to ensure that the pins hold securely in the socket. LED illuminants with GU5.3 sockets adhere exactly to these dimensions and guarantee maximum compatibility with existing sockets.
In most cases, GU5.3 LED lamps also have the suffix MR16 in addition to the specification of the socket size. This size specification refers to the reflector of the GU5.3 LED lamp. MR stands for multifaceted reflector, i.e. a concave mirror that reflects light through small facets. In MR16, the specifications are not given in millimetres, but in eighths of an inch. So MR16 reflectors have a diameter of 16/8 inch, which is about 51 mm. The glass body is usually 38 mm long. Smaller illuminants with pin socket GU5.3 comply with the MR11 standard, i.e. have a diameter of 11/8 inch or 35 mm. You will also find the two reflectors under the millimetre-oriented names MR51 and MR35, but the dimensions are the same as for MR16 and MR11.
The reflector design is also suited for modern LED products. As a result, not only do the socket and base fit together but the overall design is also maintained when replacing the reflector. This way you can be sure that the fitting dimension is also correct.
Use of LED lamps with socket GU5.3
As a reflector lamp, the LED lamp socket GU5.3 is often used in recessed or surface-mounted spotlights in private spaces. LED lamps with GU5.3 socket are also the right illuminant for open lights. In the commercial sector, LED lamps with GU5.3 socket are often used for accent or general lighting in shops, bars, cafés, restaurants or museums. LED lamps with GU5.3 socket produce neither UV nor IR radiation. Plus they generate very little heat and are thus ideally suited for museums or shops, and here especially for illuminating light-sensitive objects or heat-sensitive products.
