What is a mirror ball?

A mirror ball is a lighting effect consisting of a spherical core covered entirely with small glass mirror facets. These facets reflect and break up incoming light in every direction. When the mirror ball rotates, hundreds of moving points of light wander across walls, ceiling and dancefloor, creating the typical disco effect. A mirror ball produces no effect on its own – it needs a directional light source such as a pinspot to shine onto it. At LTT, mirror balls are available in sizes from 5 cm to 150 cm, with or without a motor.

What is another name for a mirror ball?

A mirror ball is also commonly called a disco ball or mirror ball. The term mirror ball is the technical designation used in event technology, while disco ball originates from the club and party scene of the disco era. Both names describe exactly the same product: a sphere covered in small mirror facets that reflect light into a room. The mirror ball became an icon of club culture from the 1970s onwards and remains a retro classic still widely used today on stages, in clubs and at weddings.

How does a mirror ball work?

A mirror ball works by reflecting and breaking up light with its many small mirror facets. A directional light source, usually a pinspot, is aimed at the ball, and each facet reflects part of that light in a different direction. When a motor rotates the mirror ball at roughly 1 to 6 RPM, the reflected points of light move across walls, ceiling and dancefloor, producing the characteristic moving disco effect. The effect becomes far more intense when haze or fog is added, because the reflected light beams then become visible in the air.

What different sizes of mirror balls are available?

Mirror balls are available in a wide range of sizes. At LTT, the product range runs from small 5 cm decorative balls up to large 150 cm models for major stage productions. Common diameters include 10, 20, 30, 50, 75 and 100 cm. Small mirror balls of 10 to 20 cm suit decoration and small parties, 30 to 50 cm models are the standard for events and weddings, and balls of 50 cm or more deliver maximum impact in clubs and on large stages. The glass facets come in 5x5 mm, 7x7 mm and 10x10 mm sizes.

Which motor suits which mirror ball size?

The right motor for a mirror ball is chosen according to the ball's weight and diameter, since the motor's load capacity must always exceed the ball weight. As a rough guide, motors rated for around 3 kg suit small balls up to 20 cm, motors rated for about 10 kg handle balls up to 50 cm, and large balls of 100 cm or more require heavy-duty motors rated for 20 kg and well above. A motor designed for a 30 cm ball cannot safely carry a 50 cm ball – choosing too weak a motor risks overload and a fall, so always match the motor load capacity to the ball.

How slowly does a disco ball normally rotate?

A disco ball normally rotates very slowly, typically at around 1 to 3 RPM, with some motors reaching up to 6 RPM. Slower rotation speeds of 1 to 3 RPM create a calm, elegant effect that suits weddings and lounges, while faster speeds of up to 6 RPM produce a more dynamic look for energetic shows. DMX-controlled motors allow you to set variable speeds between roughly 0 and 6 RPM and even change direction, giving event technicians precise control over the movement of the reflected light points.

Do you need fall protection for mirror balls?

Yes, fall protection is mandatory for mirror balls mounted overhead in any commercial setting. Under DGUV Vorschrift 17 (formerly BGV C1), overhead loads must be secondarily secured. Professional safety mirror balls and motors therefore feature a second safety eyelet to which an independent attachment chain is fixed. If the motor fails or the primary chain breaks, this safety chain catches the ball and prevents it from falling onto guests. The working load limit of every suspension component must clearly exceed the combined weight of ball and motor, and the ball should always be mounted out of reach of guests.

How do you mount a mirror ball on the ceiling?

To mount a mirror ball on the ceiling, the motor is fixed securely to a load-bearing point using suitable mounting material. The mirror ball hangs from the motor via its primary suspension, and an independent safety chain is attached to the second safety eyelet as fall protection. For professional setups, mirror balls are often suspended from truss systems instead of directly from the ceiling – with Naxpro-Truss aluminium truss and Riggatec rigging hardware from LTT, even heavy balls can be installed safely and to standard. Always ensure the suspension point and all components are rated for the total weight.
