Is powerCON AC or DC?

A PowerCON connector is an AC connector. Neutrik developed PowerCON specifically to carry alternating current (AC) mains power to professional event equipment such as lighting fixtures, amplifiers and LED walls. All PowerCON connectors are rated for voltages up to 250 V AC, with standard versions carrying 20 A, the larger version 32 A, and TRUE1 up to 16 A. PowerCON is used in both 120 V and 230 V mains regions, so you must always confirm that your supply and load voltages are compatible before connecting. It is an equipment connector, not a DC power connector.

What is the difference between SpeakON and powerCON?

The key difference between SpeakON and PowerCON is what they carry: PowerCON carries AC mains power (up to 250 V) to equipment, while SpeakON carries loudspeaker signal from an amplifier to a speaker. Both connectors, developed by Neutrik, share the same twist-lock mechanism and a similar compact, insulated design, which is why they look alike. Because they serve completely different jobs, they are keyed differently and cannot be interchanged. In short: use PowerCON for power and SpeakON for speakers — mixing them up could damage equipment or create a safety hazard.

How many amps can powerCON handle?

How many amps a PowerCON connector can handle depends on the variant. The standard PowerCON, including the original, is rated at 20 A at up to 250 V AC. In December 2013 Neutrik introduced a 32 A version for higher-current applications, available only as a Type A source connector. The PowerCON TRUE1 is rated at 16 A at 250 V, and the XX-Series breaking-capacity connectors are rated at 16 A at 250 V and 20 A at 127 V. Always match the connector's amperage rating to your load and cable cross-section for safe operation.

What is a powerCON connector used for?

A PowerCON connector is used to connect mains power to professional audio, video and lighting equipment. It most commonly serves as a locking power inlet on fixtures, amplifiers and distros. Grey power-out connectors are used to daisy-chain LED luminaires along a truss or to supply power to panels forming a video wall at concerts. PowerCON is the most widely used power system in the event industry because its twist-lock action prevents accidental disconnection under vibration or cable pull. It is designed as an equipment connector for professional use, not as a fixed mains connector inside building walls.

What is the difference between blue and grey powerCON connectors?

The difference between blue and grey PowerCON connectors is the direction of power flow. The blue Type A connector is the power-in or source connector: power flows from a blue-ended cable into a device chassis socket. The grey Type B connector is the power-out or drain connector: power flows out of a chassis socket into a grey-ended cable, typically to daisy-chain the next fixture. The two variants are deliberately made mechanically incompatible so you can never connect two mains supplies together. Always match blue to inputs and grey to outputs to keep your power run safe and predictable.

Can powerCON be connected under load?

Whether PowerCON can be connected under load depends on the type. Standard 20 A and 32 A PowerCON connectors are not designed to be connected or disconnected under load, because their protective contact is not "leading" like a Schuko plug — you must switch off the source first. The PowerCON TRUE1, introduced by Neutrik in 2011, is a true connector system with breaking capacity, so it can be connected and disconnected under load. Redesigned connectors with a "-1" suffix, such as NAC3FCA-1, can also be mated under load when used with the matching XX sockets, complying with IEC EN 60320-1.

What is the difference between powerCON and powerCON TRUE1?

The difference between standard PowerCON and PowerCON TRUE1 comes down to load handling and environmental protection. Standard PowerCON (20 A or 32 A) cannot be connected or disconnected under load and is intended for indoor use. PowerCON TRUE1 is rated at 16 A, can be connected and disconnected under load thanks to its breaking capacity, and reaches an IP65 rating with UL50E certification when mated, making it suitable for outdoor and touring environments. The TRUE1 TOP adds extra UV and weather resistance. TRUE1 is intentionally incompatible with the standard PowerCON, so choose based on whether you need outdoor protection and live-connect capability.

Which powerCON connector should I buy for outdoor stage use?

For outdoor stage and festival use you should buy a PowerCON TRUE1 or TRUE1 TOP connector. When mated, TRUE1 achieves an IP65 rating and UL50E certification, so it resists dust and water, and it can be safely connected and disconnected under load — a real advantage on a busy outdoor rig. The TRUE1 TOP variant adds UV and weather resistance for the harshest conditions. It is rated at 16 A at 250 V.
