What is the difference between a curtain track and a curtain rod?

A curtain track (also called a curtain rail) is a profiled aluminium or plastic channel in which gliders or runners travel, keeping the track largely invisible once installed. A curtain rod is a round or square decorative bar from which fabric hangs on rings or hooks. Curtain tracks are the professional choice for stage and event applications because they carry higher loads, accept motorised drives, and can be integrated into truss or rigging structures. Curtain rods are decorative and limited to lighter, manually operated fabrics.

Can curtain tracks be mounted on both ceiling and wall?

Yes — curtain tracks for stage and event use can be mounted on the ceiling via drop rods or ceiling clips, on the wall via adjustable wall brackets, or clamped directly to aluminium truss profiles for freestanding installations. Ceiling mounting maximises the usable drop height and is preferred for large spans. Wall mounting is the practical choice when ceiling access is restricted or ceiling height is low. Truss-mounted curtain tracks require no ceiling fixing at all, making them ideal for trade fair booths and touring productions.

How do I choose between single, double and triple curtain tracks?

The number of tracks should match the number of independent fabric layers you need to operate. A single track suits a simple backdrop, room divider or stage leg. A double track is the standard for stage main curtains that combine a decorative front drape with a blackout lining, or for any installation where two layers must open and close independently. A triple track adds a third inner runner for a sheer overlay or decorative valance. For complex stage dressings with main drape, mid-stage legs and a cyclorama, a multi-track system gives full independent control.

Which curtain system is best for stage and event applications?

For professional stage and event use, a heavy-duty aluminium curtain track with a documented Working Load Limit (WLL) is the correct choice. Motorised drives with DMX control allow cue-precise operation integrated into the show's lighting desk. All fabrics used in public venues must carry a B1 fire-rating certificate (DIN 4102 or EN 13501-1 Class B). Truss-mounted curtain systems — attaching the track directly to aluminium truss — are particularly popular for touring productions and trade fair booths because they require no ceiling fixing and can be assembled and struck quickly.

How does a cord-pull curtain system work?

A cord-pull curtain system routes a continuous loop of cord through the curtain track profile. The cord is connected to the leading glider carrier that holds the fabric. Pulling the front section of the cord draws the curtain closed; pulling the rear section opens it. The operating cord hangs at a fixed point at the side of the track, allowing a technician to open and close the curtain without touching the fabric itself. Cord-pull systems are widely used for theatre main drapes, room dividers and acoustic curtain panels in hotels and conference centres.

What curtain rod systems are available for professional event use?

For professional event and stage applications, aluminium curtain tracks rather than decorative rods are the standard. Available systems include single, double and multi-track aluminium profiles for ceiling or wall mounting; pipe-and-drape systems using vertical uprights and horizontal crossbars to create freestanding backdrop frames; and truss-mounted curtain rails that clamp directly to aluminium truss chords. Motorised track systems with DMX or remote control are available for show-critical applications. Accessories include precision gliders, end caps, corner connectors, bend sections and drop-rod suspension kits.

What is the difference between a curtain track and a curtain rail (Gardinenschiene)?

In English, the terms curtain track and curtain rail are largely interchangeable and both refer to a profiled channel — typically aluminium — in which gliders or runners travel to guide and support fabric panels. The German term Gardinenschiene translates directly as curtain rail or curtain track. In the professional event and stage sector, the preferred term is curtain track, and the systems are engineered to carry heavier loads, accept motorised drives and meet the safety standards required for public venue installation — distinguishing them from lightweight domestic curtain rails.

What does a professional curtain system cost, and what should I budget?

Professional curtain system costs vary significantly by specification. A basic single-track aluminium rail with manual gliders for a small backdrop starts from approximately €20–€60 per metre of track. Double-track systems with cord-pull operation typically range from €50–€120 per metre. Motorised drive units for professional stage use are priced from around €150 for compact 24 V DC drives up to €500 or more for heavy-duty DMX-controlled motors. B1-certified molton fabric adds €8–€25 per square metre depending on weight and pile. For a complete truss-mounted backdrop system including track, drive, fabric and hardware, budgets of €500–€2,000 are typical for mid-scale productions.
