What are cable bridges?

Cable bridges are protective profiles made from thermoplastic rubber, PVC or polyurethane that cover cables laid on the ground. They feature internal channels (typically 2 to 6) that route power, audio, DMX and data cables safely beneath a robust, anti-slip cover. Cable bridges prevent mechanical damage to cables from pedestrian traffic or vehicle overrun while eliminating trip hazards for crew, artists and visitors. Professional models are modular, allowing quick assembly and extension across entire venue floors or outdoor event sites. They are essential safety equipment for concerts, festivals, trade fairs, theatre productions and any event where temporary cable routing crosses walkways or vehicle access routes.

Why is it called a cable bridge?

The term "cable bridge" describes the function of creating a safe passage or "bridge" over cables that cross pedestrian walkways or vehicle routes. Just as a bridge allows people or vehicles to cross a river or valley without obstruction, a cable bridge allows foot and vehicle traffic to pass over cables without damaging them or creating trip hazards. The bridge elevates the walking or driving surface above the cable level, protecting both the cables beneath and the people or vehicles above. This terminology is widely used in event technology, stage production and industrial settings where temporary cable routing must coexist with active traffic areas.

What are the benefits of cable bridges?

Cable bridges offer multiple benefits for professional event technology and stage production. They protect expensive power, audio and data cables from mechanical damage caused by pedestrian traffic, equipment trolleys and vehicle overrun, significantly extending cable service life. They eliminate trip hazards, reducing accident risk and liability exposure for event organizers and venue operators. Cable bridges improve site organization by bundling multiple cables into clearly marked routes, simplifying troubleshooting and changes during setup. Their modular design allows quick deployment and reconfiguration between events, making them ideal for touring productions and rental companies. High-visibility markings and anti-slip surfaces enhance safety in low-light conditions and wet weather. Professional cable bridges also provide electrical isolation, preventing accidental contact with live conductors and reducing electrostatic discharge risk.

What load capacity do cable bridges support?

Professional cable bridges are available in three main load capacity classes. Light-duty models rated at 0.5 tonnes per 400 cm² are suitable for pedestrian traffic, hand trolleys and small equipment carts — ideal for indoor events, conference setups and backstage areas with minimal vehicle access. Medium-duty systems rated at 2 tonnes per 400 cm² handle forklifts, small vans and light delivery vehicles, making them appropriate for trade fair construction, outdoor festivals and venue loading docks. Heavy-duty cable bridges rated at 5 tonnes per 400 cm² withstand repeated overrun by fully loaded tour buses, articulated trucks and mobile stage vehicles — essential for large-scale festival logistics and outdoor events with intensive vehicle traffic. Always verify the manufacturer's load rating and ensure it matches your specific application and vehicle weights.

Can cable bridges handle heavy vehicles and equipment?

Yes, heavy-duty cable bridges specifically designed for vehicle overrun can safely handle heavy vehicles and equipment when correctly specified. Models rated at 5 tonnes per 400 cm² are engineered to withstand repeated passes by fully loaded delivery trucks, tour buses and mobile stage vehicles. These heavy-duty systems feature reinforced construction using commercial-grade polyurethane or thermoplastic rubber, wide base profiles for load distribution, and robust channel walls that prevent cable crushing. However, it is critical to match the cable bridge load rating to your actual vehicle weights and axle loads — a 5-tonne rating refers to the load per 400 cm² contact area, not the total vehicle weight. For intensive vehicle traffic or exceptionally heavy loads (above 10 tonnes), consult the manufacturer for specific recommendations or consider industrial-grade cable protection systems designed for permanent roadway installations.

What materials are best for outdoor cable bridges?

For outdoor event applications, thermoplastic rubber (TPR) and polyurethane (PU) compounds offer the best performance and longevity. These materials provide excellent weather resistance, UV stability and temperature tolerance from -30°C to +70°C, ensuring reliable operation through all seasons and climates. TPR and PU are resistant to oils, fuels, cleaning agents and road salts, making them suitable for festival sites, outdoor concerts and street events. They maintain flexibility in cold conditions (preventing brittle cracking) while retaining structural strength in hot weather (avoiding deformation under load). High-quality outdoor cable bridges also feature UV-stabilized pigments that prevent colour fading and material degradation from prolonged sun exposure. For maximum durability in intensive outdoor use, choose models with reinforced channel walls, self-cleaning hinges and corrosion-resistant metal connectors.

What is the required height for a cable bridge?

The required height of a cable bridge depends on the diameter and number of cables it must accommodate. Standard cable bridges with channel dimensions around 95×90 mm have an overall height of 50–80 mm, suitable for most power cables up to 32 A, DMX lines, audio multicore and network cables. For high-power distribution using 63 A or 125 A CEE connectors, choose models with larger channels (up to 120 mm high) or stack multiple standard bridges. The external height should be kept as low as possible to minimize trip risk while providing adequate internal clearance — cables should not be compressed or bent sharply inside the channels, as this can damage insulation and create fire hazards. Professional event technicians follow the rule that cable bridges should be no higher than necessary for the cables they protect, with 50–60 mm being optimal for most touring and festival applications.

Which cable bridge is best for stage and festival use?

For professional stage and festival applications, modular cable bridges with 5 or 6 channels, load capacity of 5 tonnes per 400 cm², and dovetail connection systems offer the best combination of versatility, durability and safety. Brands like Riggatec and Showtec are widely specified in the touring and festival market for their robust polyurethane construction, UV-resistant materials and self-cleaning hinge mechanisms. Choose models with high-visibility yellow lids and anti-slip ribbed surfaces for maximum safety in crowded festival environments. The modular design allows you to extend protection across long cable runs and reconfigure layouts between stages or events. For intensive touring schedules, invest in heavy-duty models with reinforced channel walls and metal connectors — the higher initial cost is offset by longer service life and reduced replacement frequency. Rental companies should stock a mix of 2-channel, 3-channel and 5-channel segments to serve diverse client requirements efficiently.
