What is live audio mixing?

Live audio mixing is the real-time process of blending multiple audio signals — vocals, instruments, DJ decks and playback — into a balanced mix that the audience hears through the PA system. During a live show, the engineer adjusts gain, EQ, effects and levels on a live mixer as the performance happens, with no chance to redo takes. Live audio mixing also involves routing separate monitor mixes to the stage so performers can hear themselves. It demands quick decisions, so live mixers prioritise fast, hands-on access to every essential control.

Do I need a mixer for live performance?

In most cases, yes — you need a mixer for live performance whenever you combine more than one audio source. A single vocalist plugging straight into a powered speaker might manage without one, but as soon as you add a second microphone, instruments or playback tracks, a live mixer becomes essential to balance levels, apply EQ and route separate feeds to your PA and stage monitors. Even a compact 4–8 channel mixer gives you control over gain, tone and effects that a direct connection simply cannot provide, making it a core part of any live PA setup.

How do I set up a mixer for live sound?

To set up a mixer for live sound, first connect all sources — microphones and instruments — to the inputs using XLR or TRS cables, and enable 48V phantom power only on channels running condenser mics. Set each channel gain so the signal peaks healthily without clipping, then dial in EQ and engage the low-cut filter on vocals. Route the main mix to your PA system and use aux sends to create monitor mixes for the stage. Add effects and compression as needed, then balance the overall mix during soundcheck. Always start with faders low and raise them gradually to avoid feedback.

Should I choose an analogue or digital live mixer?

Choose an analogue live mixer if you value simple, hands-on operation, fast setup and a lower entry price — ideal for bands, DJs and quick club gigs where every control sits under your fingers. Choose a digital live mixer if you need built-in effects, compressor/limiter, scene recall and wireless remote control from a tablet — perfect for touring productions and theatres where you re-mix multiple acts. Analogue desks are intuitive and rugged; digital desks are flexible and compact but require menu navigation. Match the choice to your workflow: simplicity favours analogue, versatility and recall favour digital.

What is the best small mixer for live performance?

The best small mixer for live performance is a compact 4–8 channel desk that offers clean mic preamps, 48V phantom power, basic EQ with a low-cut filter and ideally a USB output for recording. For a solo artist or duo, a 5- to 8-channel analogue mixer keeps setup fast and reliable, while a small digital or powermixer adds built-in effects without extra outboard gear. The right small mixer for you depends on your sources: prioritise enough combo inputs for your microphones and instruments plus a clean master output feeding your PA system.

What audio mixer do most streamers use?

Most streamers use compact USB mixers that double as an audio interface, letting them route microphones, game audio and music into a single balanced mix sent straight to the computer. Small 4–8 channel desks with a built-in USB audio interface, clean mic preamps and 48V phantom power are popular because they capture broadcast-quality vocals without a separate interface. Many streamers also value onboard effects and mute buttons for quick control during a live stream. For event-tech users who also stream, a live mixer with USB recording covers both stage duties and online broadcasting from one device.

What does a live mixer cost?

A live mixer costs anywhere from around €50 for a compact 4-channel analogue desk to several thousand euros for a professional digital touring console. Entry-level analogue mixers with 8–12 channels typically sit in the lower to mid two-figure and low three-figure range, making them accessible for beginners and small bands. Mid-size digital mixers with USB recording and app control occupy the mid to upper three-figure range, while large-format digital consoles with stage boxes and scene recall reach four figures. At LTT you find live mixers across all price levels, backed by our 3-year warranty and free shipping from €69.

Which live mixer suits a full band in a club?

A full band in a club is best served by a 12–16 channel live mixer with enough inputs for drums, bass, guitars, keyboards, several vocals and playback. Prioritise multiple aux sends so you can create separate monitor mixes for each performer, plus built-in effects and per-channel EQ with a low-cut filter to control a loud stage. A mid-size analogue desk offers fast, intuitive operation for regular club gigs, while a compact digital mixer adds scene recall if you play changing venues. Pair it with quality stage monitors and a solid PA system for the best result.
