What are the different types of flight cases and transport cases?

Professional transport cases for event technology fall into several main categories. Flight cases (road cases) are hard-shell plywood boxes used for amplifiers, consoles and lighting fixtures. Hood cases feature a deep lid that lifts over the equipment — ideal for speaker cabinets. Rack cases are built around the 19-inch standard and measured in rack units (U/HE). DJ cases are sized for controllers, mixers and turntables. Transport cases with castors suit heavy equipment. Roto-moulded polypropylene cases offer the highest level of waterproof and crushproof protection.

What is a flight case and what is it used for?

A flight case — also called a road case or touring case — is a heavy-duty transport box designed to protect professional equipment during repeated loading, shipping and use on the road. Flight cases are typically constructed from birch plywood laminated with PVC or ABS, reinforced with steel ball corners and secured with butterfly latches. The interior is foam-lined to prevent movement. Flight cases are used across live event technology for amplifiers, mixing consoles, lighting fixtures, effect units and DJ equipment.

What is the difference between a flight case and a hood case?

A flight case opens like a suitcase — the lid separates fully from the base, and the equipment is packed inside. A hood case (Haubencase) works differently: the equipment stands upright on the base, and a deep hood slides or lifts over it from above. Hood cases are favoured for speaker cabinets, subwoofers and stage monitors because the equipment can remain in its operating position while the hood is simply removed. This saves setup time and reduces the risk of damage during rapid changeovers at live events.

Which case do I need for 19-inch rack equipment?

For 19-inch rack equipment, you need a rack case sized in rack units (U or HE), where 1 U = 44.45 mm of internal height. Count the rack units occupied by your equipment, add at least 1 U for cable routing, then choose a case with that total capacity. Internal depth is equally important: measure your deepest unit and add 50–80 mm for rear cable management. For sensitive electronics such as DSP units or digital consoles, choose a rack case with shock-mount rails to protect against road vibration.

How do I choose the right case size for my equipment?

To choose the correct case size, measure your equipment's external dimensions — length, width and height — with any protruding handles, knobs or connectors included. Add a minimum of 20–30 mm on each side for foam lining. For rack equipment, count rack units and measure depth carefully. For DJ controllers, check the manufacturer's published dimensions and compare against the case's internal dimensions. When in doubt, size up: a case that is slightly too large (with additional foam padding) is always better than one that is too small.

Are cases from LTT waterproof and how are they rated?

Waterproofing depends on the case type. Roto-moulded polypropylene cases — such as those featuring integrated neoprene O-ring seals and automatic purge valves — offer the highest level of water and dust protection, suitable for outdoor use and air freight. Standard plywood flight cases and aluminium cases are splash-resistant but not fully waterproof. If IP-rated protection is required, select a roto-moulded case from the LTT range. For specific IP ratings, check the individual product data sheet or contact the LTT service team.

Can I order custom foam inserts or bespoke flight cases?

Yes. Custom foam inserts are available as CAD/CNC-cut foam precisely shaped to your equipment's dimensions, or as pick-and-pluck foam for a DIY custom fit. CNC-cut inserts are ideal for high-value or irregularly shaped equipment such as camera systems, measurement instruments or custom electronics. Padded divider systems allow the interior of a case to be reconfigured as your equipment changes. What materials are used in professional cases — plywood, aluminium or polypropylene?

Professional transport cases use three main materials. Birch plywood (7–9 mm) is the classic choice for flight cases and rack cases — strong, repairable and compatible with standard hardware. Aluminium cases are lighter and corrosion-resistant, preferred for broadcast and instrument transport. Roto-moulded polypropylene copolymer offers the highest impact and water resistance, with a crushproof single-piece shell, neoprene O-ring seals and automatic purge valves. The right material depends on the equipment value, transport conditions and whether waterproof protection is required.
