What is an equipment case?

An equipment case is a sturdy transport and storage container for technical equipment. Depending on the design, it can be a model-specific flight case, a universal case, a chest-style case, a DJ workstation, or a compact molded case. Equipment cases are used for DJ, lighting, sound, and event technology, among other applications.

How do I find the right case for my equipment?

For a model-specific case, the full equipment model number must match the manufacturer’s compatibility specifications. For a universal case, compare the external dimensions of the equipment with the usable internal dimensions of the case. Be sure to account for protruding controls, connectors, feet, and the space required for padding.

What is the difference between a universal case and a model-specific case?

A model-specific case is designed for a specific device or a defined model series. A universal case is selected based on its internal dimensions and can be adapted to different devices using dividers, padding strips, or pick-and-pluck foam. However, the greater flexibility of a universal case does not replace the need to check the actual fit.

What does “Pick & Pluck” mean in the context of an equipment case?

Pick-and-pluck foam is divided into small, removable segments. These segments are removed to match the shape of the device, creating a custom cutout. The foam is therefore also referred to as cube foam or pluck foam. Before removing any segments, the intended positions of the device and accessories should be fully determined.

Can a device be operated directly inside the case?

That depends on the case’s design and the device manufacturer’s specifications. Some DJ workstations and mixer cases feature removable panels, accessible ports, or laptop trays and are designed for operation while inside the case. Other cases are intended solely for transport and storage. The device’s required ventilation must also be taken into account.

Are equipment cases waterproof?

Equipment cases are not automatically waterproof. A certain level of protection against water or dust can only be assumed if the manufacturer specifies a corresponding feature or IP rating for the specific model. Terms such as “flight case,” “hard-shell case,” or “water-repellent outer shell” do not equate to blanket waterproofing.

When should an equipment case have wheels or a trolley function?

Wheels or a trolley function are particularly useful when the case, together with the equipment, is difficult to carry or is regularly moved over long distances. Factors to consider include the total weight, the transport route, stairs, thresholds, and the available storage space. The maximum load capacity of the wheels is determined by the manufacturer’s specifications for the respective case.

Is every flight case suitable for air travel?

No. The term “flight case” does not automatically mean that a case meets an airline’s baggage regulations. Before air travel, you must check the external dimensions, total weight, latches, and the airline’s specific transport conditions. For sensitive or valuable equipment, additional special requirements for checked or special baggage may apply.
