What types of equipment cases are available?
The appropriate design depends on which piece of equipment is to be transported, how often the equipment is moved, and whether the equipment is to remain in the case during use. Generally, several types of equipment cases can be distinguished.
Model-Specific Flight Cases
Model-specific equipment cases are designed for a specific piece of equipment or a clearly defined model series. The interior dimensions and padding are tailored to the respective equipment. Such cases are available, for example, for DJ controllers, mixers, media players, Moving Heads, or effects units.
When selecting a case, be sure to note the complete model name. Devices with similar names may differ in their dimensions, connections, or controls. A case designed for a specific model therefore does not automatically fit its predecessor or successor.
Universal Cases
Universal cases do not have a fixed cutout for a specific device. The key factors here are the usable interior dimensions and the available interior fittings. Some models are equipped with dividers, while others feature foam padding that can be molded to the shape of the device.
Universal cases are particularly suitable for varying equipment, tools, measuring instruments, controllers, small devices, and accessories. They are also a practical solution when no model-specific case is available for a device.
Equipment Cases with Pick-&-Pluck Foam
With pick-and-pluck foam—also known as cube foam or pull-out foam—the material is divided into small segments. Individual segments can be removed to create a custom fit for the equipment. A separate cutout is not required with this type of insert.
Pick-and-pluck cases are suitable for devices and accessories of various shapes. Before customizing the case, the position of all components should be planned so that there is sufficient foam space between the device, accessories, and the outer wall.
DJ Controller Cases and Workstations
DJ cases are available for controllers, mixers, media players, and other components of a DJ setup. In addition to classic transport cases, there are workstation models that can be used as a workspace once opened.
Some DJ workstations feature a pull-out or removable laptop tray, removable front panels, and cable ports. Depending on the case model, this allows the device to be connected and operated inside the case. With other DJ cases, the device must be completely removed before use.
Chest-style cases for multiple devices

For heavy or bulky equipment, equipment cases with transport aids are available. Depending on the model, trolley cases feature casters and an extendable telescoping handle. Larger chest and flight cases may be equipped with multiple swivel casters, some of which also have locking brakes.
Whether a transport aid is necessary depends on the case’s own weight, the weight of the equipment, and the distances to be covered. Thresholds, stairs, uneven surfaces, and the available loading area should also be taken into account when making your selection.
Lightweight Molded Cases and EVA Cases
In addition to classic flight cases made of wood-based materials, lightweight molded cases are also available. Some of these models are made of molded EVA rigid foam and feature a fabric outer shell, a zipper, and a padded interior.
Such cases are lighter and more compact than many traditional flight cases. However, the level of protection they offer against moisture, pressure, or impacts depends on the specific product. A specific protection rating may only be assumed if it is explicitly stated in the manufacturer’s technical specifications.

Cases for DJ Equipment
For DJ equipment, cases are available for DJ controllers, mixers, CDJs, media players, and turntables, among other items. Cases for Lighting and Show Technology

Materials and Construction of Equipment Cases
Equipment cases vary significantly in material, weight, and construction. Not every case has the same hardware or interior configuration. Therefore, the technical specifications of each individual item should always be checked separately.
Flight Cases Made of Wood-Based Materials
Many classic flight cases are made of laminated wood-based materials such as multi-layered glued laminated timber, plywood, or MDF. Depending on the design, the edges are edged with aluminum profiles and the corners are reinforced with metal fittings or ball corners.
The specific material thickness varies by product. Furthermore, greater material thickness does not automatically mean that every component of the case is suitable for any load. Only the manufacturer’s specifications are authoritative regarding the permissible load.
Latches, Hinges, and Handles
Depending on the case, butterfly latches, snap locks, or other closure systems are used. Some snap locks feature a locking function. Removable lids, locking hinges, and removable front panels can facilitate access to the equipment.
Carrying handles can be mounted on the outside or recessed into the case. Larger cases often feature multiple handles so that the case can be moved by two people. The number and position of the handles must be appropriate for the weight and design of the specific case.
Interior Design and Padding
The interior lining may consist of, among other materials, foam, foam rubber, rubber padding, or felt. The appropriate design depends on the shape, surface, and sensitivity of the equipment being transported.
- Fixed foam padding: For cases with a predetermined device shape or defined compartment layout.
- Pick-and-pluck foam: For a customizable layout without traditional cutouts.
- Adjustable padding strips: For adapting a multi-format case to different device sizes.

Wheels, Trolley Function, and Stacking Aids
Larger equipment cases can be equipped with swivel casters, braked casters, or corner casters. Trolley cases combine casters with a retractable handle. Some flight cases also feature stacking trays or stackable ball corners.
Stackability should only be assumed if it is explicitly stated for the specific item. The maximum load, the load capacity of the casters, and the correct stacking position must also follow the manufacturer’s specifications.
What should you look for when buying an equipment case?
A matching product name alone is not always sufficient. Before ordering, you should compare the equipment, the case, and the intended use.
Check the exact device model number
For a model-specific case, the device’s model number must exactly match the case’s compatibility specifications. Be sure to also consider suffixes, model generations, and variants.
If a case is listed by the manufacturer as compatible with multiple models, you should still check whether additional padding, adapters, or inserts are required.
Compare internal dimensions with the device
For universal cases, the width, depth, and height of the device must be compared with the usable interior dimensions. Protruding controls, feet, handles, jacks, and permanently mounted cable ports should also be measured.
If you plan to use foam padding, the case should not be chosen to be exactly the same size as the device. There must be sufficient space for the intended padding and for safely inserting and removing the device.
Allow Space for Accessories
Power supplies, connection cables, remote controls, mounting brackets, and other accessories require additional space. Some cases feature a separate accessory compartment. In universal cases, depending on the interior configuration, a dedicated area can be set up within the foam or between the dividers.
Accessories should not be left loose on sensitive displays, faders, lenses, or other controls.
Consider transport distance and weight
For short distances, a case with a carrying handle may suffice. For heavy equipment or longer distances, wheels or a trolley function are often more practical. The weight of the empty case itself and the total weight with the equipment inside must also be taken into account.
When transporting equipment in a vehicle, it’s also important to ensure that the case fits in the designated cargo area and can be secured to prevent it from sliding around.
Check for operability inside the case
Some equipment cases are designed as workstations or as cases that can be operated from the top. Others are intended solely for transport. If a device is to be operated inside the case, control elements, connections, cable routes, and necessary ventilation openings must remain accessible.
Whether operation inside the case is intended is specified in the respective product description and the device manufacturer’s specifications.
Do Not Assume Protection Rating
A closed case is not automatically water- or dust-tight. If a product has a certified IP protection rating, this is specified in the technical specifications for the respective model. If no such specification is provided, you should not assume any specific level of protection against water or dust.
Flight case, hard-shell case, rack, or bag?
Various transport solutions are available for event equipment. Which option is suitable depends on the equipment, protection requirements, weight, and transport route.
Classic Flight Case
A classic flight case has a rigid construction and is often equipped with reinforcing profiles, metal fittings, sturdy latches, and a padded interior. It is suitable for equipment that is regularly stored or transported and needs to remain securely in place within the case.
Hard-shell case
Hard-shell cases consist of a molded, rigid outer shell. Depending on the model, they may include foam, tear-away foam, dividers, or a trolley function. Some products have a specified IP rating, but this does not automatically apply to the entire category.
Rack and Rack Case
A rack case is designed for equipment in a standardized rack format. It is primarily used for power amplifiers, signal processors, radio receivers, and other rack-mountable components. Equipment without rack brackets, on the other hand, requires an equipment case or universal case.
Padded Bag
Equipment bags and soft bags are lighter and more flexible than rigid cases. Depending on the model, they feature padding, carrying handles, shoulder straps, or additional compartments. However, they do not automatically replace the rigid outer structure of a flight case or hard-shell case.
Buying Guide: Which Equipment Case Is Right for Which Application?
The following examples will help you narrow down the right type of case for different applications.
Scenario 1: A specific DJ controller needs to be transported regularly
Recommendation: A model-specific DJ flight case or controller workstation. Check the exact controller model number and the manufacturer’s compatibility list. If the case is also to serve as a workspace, look for a laptop tray, accessible ports, and removable front panels.
Scenario 2: Various small devices are transported on a rotating basis
Recommendation: A universal case with pick-and-pluck foam or adjustable dividers. The interior layout can be customized to fit the specific equipment. Sufficiently large interior dimensions and a practical distribution of padding are crucial.
Scenario 3: Multiple identical spotlights or Moving Heads are transported together
Recommendation: Chest-style case with separate equipment compartments. The individual compartments prevent direct contact between the devices. For heavy loads, casters can make transport easier. Accessory compartments provide additional space for cables and mounts.
Scenario 4: Mixers, turntables, or laptops require a dedicated transport solution
Recommendation: Device-specific hard case or flight case. For mixing console cases, check whether the device can be operated from above. For laptop and turntable cases, the maximum device dimensions are the deciding factor.

Recommendation: A universal case or trolley case with compartments and dividers. Document pockets, pen holders, or separate accessory sections can make organization easier. A trolley function is useful for longer trips.
Scenario 6: A controller case that is as lightweight as possible is needed
Recommendation: A compact molded case or EVA case. Compare the lighter weight with the required level of protection. The material, padding, closure, and any specified water-repellent features must be checked for the specific model.
