What is a rack in event technology?

A rack in event technology is a standardised frame or enclosure designed to house multiple equipment modules in an organised, compact format. The international 19-inch standard defines a mounting width of 483 mm, with equipment height measured in rack units (U), where 1U equals 44.4 mm. Racks provide secure mounting for mixers, amplifiers, effects processors, lighting controllers and other professional equipment, using threaded rack rails and front-panel mounting screws. Professional racks are available as stationary studio cabinets, angled DJ racks for mobile performance, or protective flight cases with wheels and shock mounting for touring applications.

What does 19-inch rack mean?

The term "19-inch rack" refers to the international standard mounting width of 482.6 mm (19 inches) measured between the centres of the mounting holes on rack rails. This standard, defined in IEC 60297 and EIA-310-D, ensures global compatibility across professional audio, lighting, IT and broadcast equipment. Equipment modules designed for 19-inch racks feature front panels with mounting ears that align with the standardised hole spacing, allowing secure installation using M6 rack screws or 12-24 UNC screws and cage nuts. The 19-inch format has been the industry standard since the 1960s and remains universal in professional event technology.

What materials are professional racks made from?

Professional racks are constructed from cold-rolled steel (typically S-355 JR grade) with wall thicknesses of 1.5–2 mm for upright profiles and crossbars, providing high load capacity and durability. Studio racks often use powder-coated steel in signal blue (RAL 5005) and pure orange (RAL 2004) for corrosion resistance and visibility. Flight cases combine 7–9 mm plywood or ABS plastic shells with aluminium extrusions, offering impact protection and lightweight construction. For outdoor or high-humidity environments, hot-dip galvanised steel racks prevent rust and extend service life. Premium wooden studio racks use solid oak, walnut or sapele with veneer finishes for aesthetically pleasing installations.

How much weight can a rack hold?

Rack load capacity varies by construction quality and design. Bay load — the total weight supported between two uprights — typically ranges from 100 kg for lightweight studio racks to 300 kg or more for heavy-duty touring cases. Shelf load, the maximum weight per individual rack level, commonly ranges from 30 kg to 50 kg for standard configurations. High-capacity industrial racks can support bay loads up to 15,000 kg, though such ratings apply to pallet racking systems rather than 19-inch equipment racks. Always verify that your combined equipment weight does not exceed the specified bay load, and distribute heavy amplifiers and power supplies across multiple levels to avoid point-load stress on rack rails.

What is the difference between a DJ rack and a studio rack?

DJ racks feature angled front sections that position mixers and controllers at ergonomic operating angles, improving visibility and reducing strain during live performances. They typically include integrated laptop shelves, cable routing channels, transport wheels and protective flight case construction for mobile applications. Studio racks are stationary vertical cabinets designed for permanent installations in control rooms or equipment spaces, often using wooden construction with doors and offering greater equipment capacity (up to 42U height). Studio racks prioritise density and aesthetics, while DJ racks emphasise portability, quick setup and performance ergonomics. Both follow the 19-inch mounting standard, ensuring equipment compatibility across rack types.

How do I choose the right rack depth?

Rack depth must accommodate your deepest equipment module plus 50–100 mm clearance for cable routing and airflow. Measure equipment depth from the front mounting surface to the rearmost connector or cooling vent. Compact mixers and effects units typically require 300–400 mm depth, standard amplifiers and wireless systems need 450–500 mm, while deep amplifiers and servers require 550–600 mm or more. Insufficient depth forces cables to bend sharply or prevents rear panel access, while excessive depth increases case weight and shipping costs. For touring applications, choose the shallowest rack that provides adequate clearance — this minimises transport volume and reduces load-in effort.

What rack accessories do I need for professional installation?

Essential rack accessories include cage nuts and M6 rack screws for equipment mounting, blank panels (1U, 2U, 3U) to fill unused spaces and improve airflow, and rack-mount power distribution units (PDUs) with surge protection and individual outlet switches. Cable management accessories such as brush panels, cable routing rings and Velcro ties maintain organised installations and simplify troubleshooting. For equipment generating significant heat, install rack-mount fan units (typically 1U or 2U height) to force airflow through densely packed bays. Shelf units support non-rackmount equipment such as laptops or external drives, while drawer units provide secure storage for cables, adapters and small accessories within the rack itself.

How long does rack delivery take from LTT?

LTT ships racks and rack accessories from our logistics centre in Bocholt, Germany, with delivery times varying by destination and product availability. Standard delivery within Germany typically takes 2–4 business days, while international shipments to the UK, Ireland and other European countries require 4–7 business days depending on customs processing and carrier routing. Express delivery options are available for time-critical projects, reducing delivery times to 1–2 business days within Germany and 2–3 business days for most European destinations. Orders over €69 qualify for free standard shipping, while express services incur additional fees based on package weight and destination. Custom-configured racks or special-order items may require extended lead times — contact our sales team for specific delivery estimates on bespoke configurations.
