What does "soft luggage" or "soft bag" mean?

In event technology, "soft luggage" — or a soft bag — means a padded transport bag made from flexible, durable fabric rather than a rigid shell. A softbag combines an abrasion-resistant outer material with internal foam padding to protect equipment such as mixers, cables, lighting fixtures and effect devices during transit. The term "soft" distinguishes these bags from hard flight cases: they are lighter, foldable when empty and quicker to grab, while still cushioning knocks, dust and light rain. Softbags are the everyday transport choice for DJs, bands and event crews who move gear by van.

What does a soft-sided bag mean compared to a hard case?

A soft-sided bag means a transport bag whose walls are made of padded fabric instead of rigid plastic or aluminium. Compared with a hard flight case, a soft-sided softbag is significantly lighter, can be folded or stacked flat when empty and is faster to carry thanks to shoulder straps and grab handles. The trade-off is protection level: a hard case offers maximum crush resistance for air freight and heavy touring, while a soft-sided bag offers foam-cushioned protection ideal for handling, van transport and frequent load changes. Many professionals use both for different types of gear.

Are softbags waterproof?

Most event softbags are water-repellent rather than fully waterproof. The durable fabric shell is treated with a water-repellent coating that shrugs off dust and light rain during load-in and load-out, keeping the padded interior dry in typical conditions. For genuine waterproofing in heavy rain or open-air events, look for models with roll closures, welded seams or storm flaps, or add a dedicated rain cover. If you regularly transport gear in wet conditions, choose a softbag explicitly rated waterproof, or reserve sensitive devices for a sealed hard case.

Can you take a soft suitcase on a plane?

You can take a soft suitcase or soft bag on a plane, but whether it goes as cabin or checked luggage depends on size, weight and the airline's rules. For event technology, a soft-sided bag is convenient for carrying accessories and cables because it flexes to fit overhead bins and folds away when empty. However, valuable or fragile gear such as moving heads and mixing consoles is far safer in a rigid flight case for air travel, since softbags offer foam cushioning but not the crush resistance needed for rough baggage handling. Always confirm dimensions with the airline before flying.

What is soft-side checked luggage in an event-tech context?

Soft-side checked luggage refers to fabric-walled bags that you hand over as hold baggage rather than carry into the cabin. In an event-technology context, soft-side softbags are practical for checking in bulky but non-fragile items like cables, straps, clamps and covers, because they are lightweight and pack flat. For checked transport of sensitive equipment such as effect machines or lighting fixtures, though, foam-padded softbags provide limited protection against rough handling — a hard flight case is the safer choice. Choose the format based on how fragile the contents are and how they are handled in transit.

Which softbag type suits my application best?

The best softbag type depends on what you transport and how often. Mobile DJs suit slim, padded mixer or controller bags plus a cable bag; bands benefit from universal padded bags with adjustable dividers for mixed gear; theatre crews need lighting fixture bags with thick foam for moving heads and LED bars; trade-fair and mobile-stage teams want robust universal softbags with reinforced bases for truss accessories and effect machines. Decide first what you carry, how frequently and how far, then match padding thickness, internal dimensions and compartments to that workflow. This use-case approach delivers the optimal softbag for your application.

What does a softbag for event equipment cost?

The cost of a softbag for event equipment varies with size, padding and construction quality. Small accessory pouches and simple cable bags sit at the lower end, while heavily padded lighting-fixture and effect-device bags with reinforced bases cost more because they use thicker foam and heavy-duty zips. A softbag is generally a lower-cost investment than an equivalent hard flight case, which is one reason it is popular for lightweight, frequent transport. At LTT you can compare options across price levels, benefit from free shipping from €69 and buy on invoice, with a 3-year warranty on your purchase.

How do I choose the right softbag size for my gear?

To choose the right softbag size, always compare the bag's internal dimensions against your device rather than the external measurements. Measure your equipment in length, width and height, then add roughly 2–4 cm on each side to allow for foam padding clearance. For heavy or fragile gear such as moving heads and effect machines, prioritise deep foam and internal dividers. When a device sits between two standard sizes, size up and fill the gap with padding or dividers — a snug, well-cushioned fit protects your equipment far better than forcing it into a bag that is too tight.
