What is a universal case?

A universal case is a transport container designed to protect many different devices rather than one specific model. Instead of a milled, model-specific interior, a universal case offers a generously sized space – often with adjustable dividers or customisable pick and pluck foam – so lighting fixtures, effect devices, DMX controllers, cables and DJ gear can share one case. Universal cases range from lightweight padded soft bags to rigid plywood transport cases with casters. They are ideal for mobile DJs, working bands, theatres, clubs and rental companies who carry mixed equipment and value flexibility, saved transport space and a lower overall cost.

Will a universal case really fit my equipment?

Yes – a universal case is built to fit a wide range of equipment sizes, provided you choose the right dimensions. The key is to compare the inner dimensions of the case against your largest device, including brackets and connectors, and add clearance for foam. Many universal cases add flexibility through pick and pluck foam or adjustable dividers, so you can create custom cavities for irregular gear. For example, an inner space of around 465 x 345 x 165 mm suits DMX controllers and small mixers, while roughly 570 x 540 x 570 mm handles heavier stage tech. Are universal cases as protective as model-specific ones?

Universal cases can offer protection very close to model-specific cases when fitted with the right foam. A product-specific flight case delivers a perfect edge-to-edge fit, which is unbeatable for fragile flagship devices. A universal case relies on pick and pluck foam, pre-cut blocks and wave foam in the lid to cushion your gear, combined with rigid plywood or aluminium construction, butterfly latches and ball corners. How do I know which universal case size is right for me?

To find the right universal case size, start by measuring your largest device including feet, handles and connectors, then add a few centimetres of clearance for foam padding. Always plan around the case's inner dimensions rather than the outer ones. Universal cases often follow a size grid from S to XXL – for instance an Alucase with 548 x 350 x 327 mm inner space, or a large 570 x 540 x 570 mm transport case for heavy gear. Also check the payload rating: heavy fixtures need rigid plywood construction, while light accessories fit comfortably in a padded soft case.

What is the difference between a universal case and a custom flight case?

The difference lies in fit versus flexibility. A custom flight case is milled and foamed to fit exactly one device, giving maximum protection but no adaptability. A universal case has a generously sized interior with foam or dividers, so it accepts many different device sizes. A universal case wins on flexibility, space efficiency and cost when you carry mixed equipment or upgrade gear often. A custom flight case wins when a single fragile or expensive device demands a perfect fit. What does a universal case cost?

The price of a universal case depends on size, construction and hardware.
